June 10 - First Day on the Camino
Well we have finally started our journey on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. As we described yesterday, a few of us decided to start our journey in Portugal, so we had to walk backwards a few miles, and start in Valenca, Portugal. In doing so, we ended up walking a longer distance than others in our group. While most walked around 10 miles from Tui, Spain to O Porriño, six of us ended up walking close to 17 miles. We are feeling it tonight.
After we left Tui, most of our walk was through some beautiful countryside, although we did spend some time along 20th century improvements (highways and industrial areas). Instead of explaining everything, we've attached a few more pictures. It's amazing that many of the things we see along this route are between 500 and 2,000 years old. For instance, the picture with the stone cutout of a pilgrim is right in front of a Roman bridge (1st century) and the picture showing
a cross and monument is where San Telmo got sick and died in 1251.
Best of all today is that we got to spend time alone by ourselves walking, or in conversation with the other 4 people in our group. Both were very enjoyable.
Susan's goal is to walk at the pace of prayer. If any of you would like us to pray for anything for you, email us atcosio@mbkengineers.com.
Talk to you again tomorrow,
Gib & Susan
